It is In the ancient, emerald depths of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, I met a silverback who changed me. One of three in his family group, this gentle soul chose to rest just metres from where I sat—his forearms crossed, his breath slow, his gaze far away. He lay in stillness, as if we were old friends reunited in the silence.
He watched me. Held my gaze. And somehow, he welcomed the lens.
Every glance felt intentional. Every breath, a meditation. I was torn between photographing the moment and simply being present for it. His presence stilled the forest around us—and something within me, too.
This black-and-white portrait is more than a study of form. It is a portrait of presence. Of emotional intelligence. Of the rare and sacred connection between species—between sentient beings.
